About GEP
What was the Gifted Education Programme?
The Gifted Education Programme (GEP) was introduced by MOE in 1984 to identify and nurture intellectually gifted students. Pupils were screened in Primary 3 through a two-stage process: a GEP Screening Exercise followed by a GEP Selection Exercise. Those selected attended one of 9 designated primary schools from P4 to P6.
The GEP curriculum emphasised enrichment, not acceleration. It featured higher-order thinking, creativity, independent research projects, and mentoring. After P6, GEP students sat the PSLE alongside mainstream students and posted to secondary school through the normal S1 Posting process.
In March 2026, MOE announced that GEP would be discontinued from 2027 and replaced by Advanced Modules. These will be offered at 15 centres across Singapore, covering subjects like Mathematics, Science, and English Language. Unlike GEP, students will attend Advanced Modules as after-school programmes while remaining enrolled in their home school.
