PSLE Trap

Present Perfect vs Simple Past: The #1 PSLE Confusion

Use SIMPLE PAST when:

  • Specific time is mentioned (yesterday, last week)
  • I visited Malaysia last year.
  • She ate nasi lemak yesterday.

Common mistakes:

  • "I have visited Malaysia last year."
  • "She already finished her work."

Subject-Verb Agreement

Critical

Subject-verb agreement means the verb must match the subject in number. This is heavily tested in PSLE.

1. Compound Subjects with "and"

Usually take a plural verb

Tom and Jerry are best friends.

2. Either/Or, Neither/Nor

Verb agrees with the nearest subject

Neither the boys nor the girl wants to go.

3. Collective Nouns (PSLE Trap!)

Usually singular in Singapore English

The team is playing well today.

4. Indefinite Pronouns

everyone, somebody, each = singular

Everyone is here. Each student has a book.
