Clear passion + documented evidence
EAE amplifies what you have built. Your aptitude evidence can compensate for a non-elite ELR2B2. No downside if rejected — JAE is automatic backup. This is the strongest EAE candidate profile.
Singapore’s polytechnics have two main doors in: EAE (Early Admissions Exercise) opens in June before O-Levels and rewards aptitude, portfolio and passion — while JAE (Joint Admissions Exercise) opens in January after results and is purely ELR2B2-based. Most students can — and should — apply via both. Here is how to choose the right path for your profile.
The two routes serve different student profiles. Understanding the mechanics helps you decide where to invest your energy.
Walk through three student profiles to find the path that fits your situation.
EAE amplifies what you have built. Your aptitude evidence can compensate for a non-elite ELR2B2. No downside if rejected — JAE is automatic backup. This is the strongest EAE candidate profile.
A strong ELR2B2 in JAE will get you into most courses you want. An EAE application without strong aptitude evidence risks consuming write-up and interview prep time that could go toward O-Level revision.
EAE rejection does not penalise you in JAE. Even a modest aptitude write-up gives you a shot at a course you genuinely want. Applying costs nothing beyond your time writing the 600-character statement.
Even Persona B benefits from a quick EAE attempt — you only need one good write-up for a course you genuinely like. JAE is automatic if EAE fails.
Key takeaway
An accepted EAE offer is binding once you meet the MERs. Here is the trade-off in plain terms.
Once you accept an EAE conditional offer and subsequently meet the Minimum Entry Requirements after O-Level results, your placement is binding. You cannot take a JAE place for a different course.
A student accepts an offer in September, then scores far better than expected in January and wishes they could switch to a higher-COP JAE course. The acceptance is binding once MERs are met — so think carefully before you accept.
Declining the EAE offer and waiting for JAE is a perfectly valid strategy. You can decline during the acceptance window (8–11 September 2026) with zero penalty in JAE.
Two students, two strategies — see how the calendar plays out for each.
EAE rejection has zero impact on JAE. Use the EAE calculator to confirm eligibility, then start drafting your 600-character write-up. Applications open 25 June 2026.
