For most Singapore A-Level students, NUS remains the strongest all-round choice for global reputation, breadth and research depth. NTU is particularly compelling for engineering, computing, science and technology. SMU stands apart for business, law, accountancy and seminar-based learning, with the highest secured-employment rate among Singapore's six autonomous universities in GES 2025. The best choice depends less on prestige alone and more on programme, learning style, cost and career direction.

Choosing by strength, not just prestige
Choose NUS for global visibility, breadth and research. Choose NTU for engineering, computing, data, science and technology. Choose SMU for business, accountancy, law, economics, social sciences and employer-facing careers.
Admission Under the 70-Point RP System
From the 2026 A-Level intake, the revised University Admission Score is capped at 70 Rank Points (RP), down from the old 90-point scale. The old 90-point Indicative Grade Profile (IGP) tables are deprecated and should not be used for 2027 planning.
How the 70-point score is built
- Core: 3 best H2 content subjects + General Paper (GP)
- Project Work: pass/fail only — does not add to the score
- Bonus points possible: H1 Mother Tongue Language (MTL) and a 4th content subject may count if they improve the score
Don't mechanically convert old cut-offs to the new scale — admission remains competitive and programme-specific.

Campus & Teaching Style
NUS at Kent Ridge (~30,000 undergrads) offers breadth and scale — proactive students who seek out opportunities benefit most. NTU at Jurong West (~24,000) has a residential campus character with a strong engineering and science identity, plus interdisciplinary programmes. SMU at Bras Basah/CBD (~10,000) runs on seminar-style discussion, presentations and teamwork, and holds Triple Crown accreditation (AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS) — the only Singapore university to do so.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose NUS if…
You want the strongest overall ranking, breadth across faculties, deep research exposure and a large ecosystem of peers and alumni.
Choose NTU if…
You're drawn to engineering, computing, data, science or technology, want a campus-based experience, and value applied, interdisciplinary programmes (QS 2027 #12).
Choose SMU if…
You're set on business, accountancy, economics, law, computing or social sciences, thrive in seminars, and want a smaller city-campus community with strong employment (91.4%).
Rank the programme first, then the environment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is NUS still the best choice in 2027?
NUS remains the highest-ranked of the three (QS 2027 #10, #1 in Asia), but "best" depends on the programme, not prestige alone. NTU is stronger for engineering/computing/science/tech, and SMU leads on secured employment (91.4% in GES 2025) for business, law, accountancy and applied disciplines.
Is the old 90-point admission score still used for 2027 intake?
No. From the 2026 A-Level intake, the University Admission Score is capped at 70 Rank Points (RP), replacing the old 90-point Indicative Grade Profile (IGP) system. Old 90-point cut-off tables should not be mechanically converted to the new scale.
Which university is cheapest for Singapore Citizens?
With the MOE Tuition Grant, NUS and NTU charge lower subsidised annual fees in Business, Computing and Arts & Social Sciences (SGD 8,300–9,700) than SMU’s main fee group (SGD 11,550). Law is closer: NUS and SMU both charge SGD 12,750. Always check the official fee table for your specific programme.
Does NTU offer an undergraduate Law degree?
No. NTU does not offer a standalone LLB comparable to NUS or SMU’s undergraduate Law programmes.
Which university had the best graduate employment outcomes in GES 2025?
SMU reported the highest secured-employment rate at 91.4% (87.1% overall employed, 79.8% in full-time permanent roles). NTU reported about 9 in 10 graduates secured employment. NUS results are reported at programme/course level rather than as a single university-wide headline figure.
When are the 2026 A-Level results released?
SEAB’s tentative window is Friday 19 February to Tuesday 23 February 2027. This date is still marked tentative and has not been confirmed as exact.
Have the 2027 application deadlines been published?
Not as of 12 August 2026. For context, the previous cycle (for AY2026 admission) closed 19 March 2026 for NUS, NTU and SMU applications. Always check each university’s official Important Dates page closer to the 2027 cycle.

The bottom line
The 2027 choice comes down to breadth (NUS) vs technical depth (NTU) vs professional focus (SMU). Rank the programme first, then weigh cost, fit and teaching style — and check each university's official Important Dates page once 2027 windows are published.
Note on completeness: 2027 application deadlines are NOT verified as of 12 August 2026 — figures shown for the previous cycle are for context only. The SEAB 2026 A-Level results window (19–23 February 2027) remains tentative. Fee and employment figures reflect AY2026/27 and GES 2025 respectively; always confirm current figures on each university's official pages before deciding.
