Understanding L1R5 for JC Admission

What is L1R5?

L1R5 stands for 1 Language + 5 Relevant subjects. It's the aggregate score used for Junior College admissions in Singapore. The lower your L1R5 score, the better your chances of getting into competitive JCs.

L1R5 Calculation

  • L1: English or Higher Mother Tongue
  • R1: Humanities/Higher Art/Higher Music
  • R2: Mathematics or Science
  • R3: Humanities or Math or Science
  • R4-R5: Any two other subjects

Science vs Arts Stream

Science stream typically has lower (more competitive) cut-off points. Choose based on your strengths and university course aspirations, not just prestige.

Bonus Points

Up to 2 bonus points for Higher Mother Tongue (HMT) or third language. CCA achievements and leadership roles do not affect L1R5.

🤔Got Questions?

🎯

What score do I need for RI or HCI?

RI and HCI typically need L1R5 of 3-5 for Science. Arts streams accept slightly higher scores. These are Singapore's most competitive JCs!

🌍

JC A-Levels vs IB - What's the difference?

JC = 2 years A-Level curriculum. IB = International Baccalaureate (ACS-I, SJI). IB is more holistic with CAS requirements and globally recognized!

📝

Can I appeal if I miss the cut-off?

Yes! Apply during JAE Appeals Exercise. Appeals depend on vacancies. Strong CCAs may help, but academics are still the main factor.

🔬

Science or Arts stream - which one?

Follow your passion! Science = STEM university courses. Arts = Law, Business, Humanities. Most universities accept both streams anyway.
