Ultimate Guide to O-Level Score Calculation (2026)
What is L1R5 and how is it calculated?
The L1R5 score is the primary metric for admission into Junior Colleges (JC) and Millennia Institute (MI). It consists of your best first language (English or Higher Mother Tongue) plus your 5 most relevant subjects.
To qualify, you must include one Humanities subject, one Mathematics or Science subject, and the remaining three best subjects. In this system, a lower aggregate score is better, with a perfect score being 6.
Pro Tip: Don't forget your CCA bonus points! Depending on your achievement level, up to 4 points can be deducted from your L1R5 aggregate.
What is ELR2B2 and how is it calculated?
The ELR2B2 score is used for admission into Polytechnic diplomas. It stands for English Language, 2 Relevant subjects, and 2 Best subjects.
Depending on the course you are applying for (e.g., Engineering, Business, or Arts), your subjects are categorized into Groups A, B, C, or D. This ensures that your strength in specific subject areas is weighted correctly for the diploma's requirements.
Polytechnics like SP, NP, TP, NYP, and RP use this score to determine your eligibility for their various diploma programs.
Which one matters for your child?
| Pathway | Metric | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| JC / MI Route | L1R5 | Low Aggregate (A-Levels) |
| Poly Route | ELR2B2 | Course-specific category fit |
Many students check both pathways, as O-Level results can often unlock both a JC and a Poly option. We recommend using both our calculators to see the full range of possibilities.
O-Level Grade Point Reference Table
Both L1R5 and ELR2B2 calculations use the same grade point system. Each O-Level grade corresponds to a point value from 1 (best) to 9 (fail). The aggregate score is the sum of these points — so lower is better.
| Grade | Grade Point | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | 1 | Distinction (Excellent) |
| A2 | 2 | Distinction (Very Good) |
| B3 | 3 | Good |
| B4 | 4 | Good (Average) |
| C5 | 5 | Pass (Fair) |
| C6 | 6 | Pass (Satisfactory) |
| D7 | 7 | Pass (Borderline) |
| E8 | 8 | Pass (Weak) |
| F9 | 9 | Fail |
Note: Grades D7 and E8 are considered passes but may not meet prerequisites for certain JC or Polytechnic courses. F9 is a fail and does not contribute to a passing aggregate.
Worked Example: Calculating L1R5 Step-by-Step
Let's walk through a real example to understand how L1R5 is calculated. Meet Sarah, a student who took 8 O-Level subjects in 2026:
Step 1: L1 is English Language (A1 = 1 point).
Step 2: R5 selection — one Humanities (Geography B4), one Math/Science (Chemistry A1), and two best remaining (Mathematics A2, Physics B3). Literature C5 is the 5th R subject since it's better than Higher Chinese for a non-MTL student.
Step 3: Calculate aggregate: 1 (English) + 2 (Math) + 1 (Chemistry) + 3 (Physics) + 4 (Geography) + 5 (Literature) = L1R5 = 16 points.
Sarah's L1R5 of 16 puts her in a competitive position for mid-tier JCs. If she had LEAPS 2.0 CCA achievement (e.g., Excellent), she could deduct up to 2 bonus points, bringing her aggregate down to 14.
