EAE 2026 at a glance

Five facts every applicant must know before applying.
  1. O-Level window: 25 June – 1 July 2026

ITE students apply 11–17 June. Working adults 1–28 June. All windows are strictly enforced — late applications are not accepted.

  2. Eligibility: ELR2B2 ≤ 26 (or ≤ 28 for Nursing)

Higher Nitec GPA ≥ 2.5 (raised from 2.0 for AY2027); Nitec GPA ≥ 3.5. Working adults need 2+ years of relevant work experience.

  3. Up to 3 course choices, 600-character write-up each

Apply via the central portal at eae.polytechnic.edu.sg. Each choice needs a separate aptitude write-up — no copy-paste allowed.

  4. Conditional offer released 8–11 September 2026

The offer converts to a firm place only if you meet Minimum Entry Requirements (MERs) when O-Level results are released in January 2027.

  5. JAE is always your backup — no downside to applying EAE

EAE rejection does not affect JAE in any way. Always apply EAE first if eligible, then treat JAE as your safety net.

📖 Definition

What is Polytechnic EAE in 2026?

EAE evaluates applicants on aptitude, portfolio, and passion — not just O-Level scores. You apply while still in school and can lock in a polytechnic place months before results.

EAE stands for Early Admissions Exercise. Unlike JAE — purely score-based, held in January after results — EAE judges you on your aptitude, portfolio and passion for a specific course. You apply while still in school (or ITE), before final results are out.

A successful applicant receives a conditional offer: a guaranteed polytechnic place, provided they meet the course’s Minimum Entry Requirements (MERs) when O-Level results are released in January 2027.

The five polytechnics admit about 20% of their intake through EAE. Course-level caps are up to 30% for most diplomas, rising to 50% for aptitude-heavy courses such as Early Childhood, Social Work, Design and Media. Exact intake proportions vary by course and are set annually by each polytechnic. Engineering and IT courses typically have lower EAE shares.

✏️ Application

How do I write the 600-character EAE write-up?

A 600-character write-up explaining your passion and aptitude for each course applied for

It is the only text evidence you submit before the interview, so treat it like a cover letter for your dream course. Answer three questions in 600 characters — every sentence must earn its place:

~150 chars
01

Why THIS course

Name the exact course and the specific thing that pulls you to it. Skip vague passion claims — be concrete and personal.

✓ Strong example

I want Diploma in Mechanical Engineering because I rebuilt my bike's gearing and want to design e-bike drivetrains.

✗ Avoid this

I have always been passionate about engineering.

~300 chars
02

Your evidence

Back it with proof — CCAs, projects, competitions, part-time work, or things you built. Outcomes and numbers beat adjectives.

✓ Strong example

Led my school robotics team to the regional finals and built a line-following robot from scratch over the holidays.

✗ Avoid this

I am hardworking and a good team player.

~150 chars
03

Your goal

Say what you will do with the diploma. A clear direction shows the course fits your plan, not just your mood.

✓ Strong example

After the diploma I want to move into renewable-energy engineering — solar and battery systems.

🎁 Offers

What happens after you get an offer?

An EAE offer is conditional. Two things can happen when your final results come out in January 2027 — here is exactly how each plays out.

Successful applicants receive conditional offers BEFORE O-Level results / final GPA. To convert to firm admission, you must still meet the polytechnic's Minimum Entry Requirements (MERs) for the course offered.

MOE Polytechnic EAE — conditional offer rules
If you meet the MER

Your place is confirmed

Accept your offer during 8–11 September 2026. Once you accept you are committed — you cannot take a JAE place for a different course. Clear the course’s MER when O-Level results drop in January and your polytechnic place is firm. No JAE needed.

If you miss the MER

Auto-revoked — but no penalty

If your final O-Level ELR2B2 (or ITE GPA) is below the course MER, the offer is automatically revoked in January 2027. You proceed to JAE like any other O-Level holder — the revocation does not penalise you. Always treat EAE as a bonus pathway, not a safety net, and study hard regardless.

🤔 Decision Guide

EAE vs JAE — which is better for me?

EAE rewards aptitude and passion; JAE is purely ELR2B2. Most students should apply via both.

Choose EAE if…
  • You have a clear course passion + documented evidence
  • Strong CCA record, portfolio, or competition placements
  • Borderline ELR2B2 estimate — aptitude can compensate
Lean JAE if…
  • High projected ELR2B2 (8 or better)
  • No strong portfolio or course-specific aptitude
  • Want maximum course flexibility after results

⚠️ Common Pitfalls

Top 8 mistakes EAE applicants make

Avoid these before you hit submit — each mistake has cost applicants their shot at an EAE offer.

  1. Applying to a course just because a friend is applying — EAE rewards genuine, documented passion.

  2. Submitting a generic write-up without course-specific evidence — polytechnics can tell.

  3. Not preparing for the interview format (some are panel, some are portfolio reviews — check in advance).

  4. Forgetting the English Language S-Pass condition — if EL is weak, check MER for each course.

  5. Accepting an EAE offer impulsively and then regretting it after better O-Level results in January.

  6. Underestimating the write-up character count — 600 characters including spaces is less than two short paragraphs.

  7. Applying for only 1 course when you have capacity for 3 — more applications at no extra cost.

  8. Not applying to EAE at all because you assume your score is too low — the aptitude component can compensate.

💬 FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the Polytechnic Early Admissions Exercise (EAE) in 2026?
EAE is an aptitude-based admissions exercise that lets graduating O-Level, ITE (Nitec / Higher Nitec) and working-adult applicants apply for and receive conditional offers from the 5 Singapore polytechnics BEFORE their final O-Level results or GPA are released. In 2026, O-Level applications open on Thursday 25 June and close on Wednesday 1 July.
When does Polytechnic EAE open in 2026?
For final-year ITE students: Thursday 11 June to Wednesday 17 June 2026. For O-Level students: Thursday 25 June to Wednesday 1 July 2026. For working adults: Monday 1 June to Sunday 28 June 2026. Selection (interviews, aptitude tests, portfolio review) runs from 6 July to 1 September 2026. Conditional offers are released between 8 and 11 September 2026.
Who is eligible for Polytechnic EAE 2026?
Three groups: (1) Graduating O-Level students projected to score net ELR2B2 of 26 points or better (28 for Nursing); (2) Final-year ITE students with projected net GPA of 3.5+ (Nitec) or 2.5+ (Higher Nitec — raised from 2.0 starting AY2027); (3) Working adults with two or more years of relevant work experience. Singapore Citizens, PRs and International Students at MOE-affiliated schools may apply.
How many courses can I apply for through EAE?
Each applicant may apply for up to 3 diploma courses across the 5 polytechnics. You submit one 600-character write-up per course explaining your aptitude and interest for that specific diploma.
What is the 600-character EAE write-up and how do I write it?
The 600-character write-up is your personal statement for each course you apply to. It should answer: Why this course? What evidence (achievements, projects, experiences) shows your aptitude? What is your future vision? Counting includes spaces. See our /eae/write-up-guide for a 5-part framework and 3 worked examples.
What happens if I accept an EAE conditional offer but fail to meet the requirements?
The conditional offer is automatically revoked if your final O-Level ELR2B2 is worse than 26 (28 for Nursing) or your final ITE GPA falls below the minimum (3.5 Nitec / 2.5 Higher Nitec; the Nitec-in-Nursing route to the Nursing diploma needs 3.0). You then proceed to the Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE) like other O-Level holders. Always have a JAE backup plan.
EAE vs JAE — which should I choose in 2026?
EAE rewards aptitude, portfolio and interview performance — strong for students with clear passion, projects or talent in a specific field. JAE is purely score-based — strong for high O-Level scorers without a strong portfolio. Most students apply via EAE first (no downside) then proceed to JAE if they don't get a firm offer. See our /blog/eae-vs-jae-2026 comparison.
Can I withdraw from an EAE offer if I want to do JAE instead?
You can decline an EAE offer during the acceptance window (8–11 September 2026 for O-Level / ITE). Once accepted, the offer is binding once you meet the conditional requirements — you cannot then take a JAE place at a different course. Decide carefully before accepting.
Do I need a portfolio for every EAE course?
No. Portfolio requirements vary by course. Design, media, animation and architecture courses typically require a portfolio. Engineering, IT and business courses focus on aptitude tests and interviews. Always check each poly's course-specific guidance in the central EAE portal at eae.polytechnic.edu.sg.
When do I find out if I got an EAE offer?
Conditional offers for O-Level and ITE applicants are released between Tuesday 8 September and Friday 11 September 2026. Working adults receive offers between 8 September and 16 October 2026. Check the central EAE portal on the day — polytechnics also email the result.
Is there a lower GPA threshold for Nitec-in-Nursing graduates applying to the Diploma in Nursing?
Yes. Per MOE: Nitec in Nursing holders only need a final net GPA of 3.0 (instead of the standard Nitec 3.5) to apply for the Diploma in Nursing or the Diploma in Health Sciences (Nursing). This carve-out recognises relevant prior healthcare training. It does NOT apply to other diploma courses, and it does NOT apply to Higher Nitec holders (whose Nursing-diploma bar is separately set by the polytechnic admitting them).
Where do I submit my EAE application — at each polytechnic's website?
No. All EAE applications are submitted through the SINGLE central portal at eae.polytechnic.edu.sg, regardless of which polytechnic(s) you are applying to. You select up to 3 courses across any combination of SP, NP, NYP, TP and RP within one application. The polytechnic websites only provide reference guides and course information — they do not accept EAE applications directly.
Can I apply to the same course at two different polytechnics via EAE?
Yes. Each of your up to 3 course choices is independent and can be at different polytechnics. You might apply to Diploma in Mass Communication at NP, Diploma in Animation at NYP, and Diploma in Communication Design at TP in the same exercise. Each choice requires its own 600-character write-up.
If I receive an EAE conditional offer, do I still need to submit JAE applications in January?
It depends on whether you have accepted the EAE offer. If you accept, and you subsequently meet the Minimum Entry Requirements (MERs) after O-Level results, your placement is secured — you do not need to participate in JAE. If you do NOT accept the EAE offer, or if your offer is revoked (because you missed MERs), you proceed to JAE normally.
The Bottom Line

Apply EAE first — there's no downside

Your shot at a poly place, months early

EAE is a free second shot at your dream course months before O-Level results

For students

Eligible? Apply. A rejection costs you nothing and your JAE chances are untouched. A win means you walk into your O-Levels with a polytechnic place already waiting.

For parents

There is no application fee and no risk to JAE. The only real cost is the time to write a sharp 600-character statement per course — and that time is well spent.

JAE is always your backup —
so apply EAE first!
