The New Short-Term Graduate Work Visa
This new visa is for graduates who complete a shorter or lower-level New Zealand qualification but do not qualify for the existing Post Study Work Visa (PSWV). Applications open 16 November 2026. It provides six months of open work rights — working under an employment agreement or contract for services while job-hunting — but business ownership is not allowed. It is intended as a bridge to an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), which is a separate visa with its own rules and does not auto-convert.
Who may qualify
- Qualification at NZQCF Level 5 to Level 7
- Studied full-time at least 24 weeks in New Zealand
- Not an English-language, foundation or bridging qualification
- Does not qualify for a PSWV through the qualification
- At least NZD $5,000 available for support
- Meets health and character requirements (medical certificate or chest X-ray if required)
- Not previously granted a Short-term Graduate Work Visa or a PSWV
Level 4 is not in the new visa's range(Levels 5–7). Some Level 4 qualifications may still qualify for the existing PSWV if they are on INZ's eligible list.
Restrictions:granted for six months; once per person; cannot be extended; cannot support a partner's work visa or a dependent child's Dependent Child Student Visa; no business ownership. A partner may apply for a work visa independently, and dependent children may apply as international students. Applicants must apply within 3 months of their NZ student visa expiring.

The Existing Post Study Work Visa (PSWV)
The PSWV remains the main longer-term route, giving up to 3 years of work rights depending on qualification and length of study. Applicants must have recently completed an approved NZ qualification, apply within the required timeframe, and show at least NZD $5,000 in funds. INZ lists the visa cost from NZD $1,670, which may vary by circumstances and country.

Work conditions depend on the qualification level:
- Degree Level 7+: can generally work any legal job, subject to occupational registration.
- Non-degree Level 7 or lower: must work in a job related to studies, and the qualification must be on INZ's eligible list.
- Master's or doctoral studied in NZ for at least 30 weeks: PSWV of up to 3 years.

Under current settings, applicants generally qualify if they hold: a degree at Level 7, full-time for at least 30 weeks in NZ; a Level 8–10 qualification, full-time for at least 30 weeks in NZ; or a non-degree Level 4–7 qualification studied full-time for the full required duration and on the eligible list (with work required to relate to the subject studied).

PSWV expansion from 16 November 2026
A specific group of Level 7 graduate-diploma holdersgains access to the PSWV. Requirements: completed an NZQCF Level 7 graduate diploma studied full-time for the full duration in NZ (with no reliance on cross-crediting or recognition of prior learning), and holds a bachelor's degree from NZ or overseas, awarded at any time. Applicants provide their bachelor's certificate and official transcript; an International Qualification Assessment is not required for the overseas bachelor's under this route, though authenticity may still be checked. The resulting PSWV is issued for the time spent studying the graduate diploma in NZ, up to a maximum of 1 year.

From Study to Work to Residence
Complete an eligible NZ qualification → apply for the appropriate graduate work visa within the timeframe → find employment meeting the visa conditions → if needed, move to an AEWV with an accredited employer → build the required skilled employment, qualification and income profile → apply for residence via an eligible Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) route if all requirements are met. Graduate visas do not guarantee residence.

Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Changes — Effective 24 August 2026
The SMC is a points-based residence route: applicants generally need a skilled job or job offer plus 6 skilled resident points from qualification, income or occupational registration, with up to 3 extra points available from NZ skilled work experience.
Work-experience points change — not a universal cut
- Currently: 3 years of NZ skilled work experience = 3 points
- From 24 Aug 2026: 2 years = 3 points; 1.5 years = 2 points; 1 year = 1 point
This lets some applicants reach 6 points with less NZ work experience — but they must still meet qualification, skilled-job, wage and other requirements.

On qualification points from 24 August 2026, INZ confirms that a doctoral degree scores 6 points, and that NZ-completed qualifications generally score about 1 point higherthan the equivalent overseas qualification (with exceptions for doctoral degrees and, in some cases, master's degrees). The exact point value depends on the qualification and, for some Level 8/9 qualifications, on whether the applicant also holds a bachelor's degree.

Two new residence pathways are added under the SMC from 24 August 2026:
- Skilled Work Experience pathway: skilled Level 1–3 occupation; at least 3 years of directly relevant work experience (any country, within the last 10 years) plus an additional 2 years of skilled NZ work experience (within the last 4 years), non-overlapping — 5 years total; wage at least 1.1× the SMC median-wage threshold (1.2× for Amber List roles).
- Trades and Technician pathway: eligible trades or technician occupations, a relevant Level 4+ qualification, at least 2.5 years of relevant post-qualification experience plus an additional 1.5 years of qualifying skilled NZ work experience (occupation must be on the official eligible list).

What It Means for Singapore Students
- Degree-level graduates are not affected the way headlines may suggest — a Level 7 degree, or Level 8–10 qualification, studied full-time for at least 30 weeks still leads to the existing PSWV of up to 3 years.
- The new six-month visa is a bridge, not a downgrade — it exists specifically for Level 5–7 graduates who would otherwise get no post-study work visa at all.
- The SMC points change is about work experience, not qualification value — 2 years of NZ skilled work experience earns the same 3 points that 3 years earns today.
- Nothing described here can be applied for yet — the earliest date in force is 24 August 2026 (SMC) and 16 November 2026 (new visa applications).
