The Common App 2026-27 application cycle opened on 1 August 2026 for students applying to begin university in the United States in autumn 2027. Early Decision and Early Action deadlines at many universities fall in November, while Regular Decision deadlines commonly fall in January — but every university sets its own dates. The most important thing for a Singapore family to do now is build a college-by-college deadline and requirements tracker before deciding whether to apply early.

What Opened on 1 August?
Common App provides the application platform, but each participating institution decides its own application fee, deadline, testing policy, essay requirements, recommendation requirements and financial-aid process. A student can apply to several universities through one Common App account, yet still face different university-specific essays, documents, score-submission methods and deadlines.
Common App states that deadlines display in the applicant's local time zone — so for a Singapore applicant, submit before 11:59pm Singapore time on the stated date, and ideally earlier.

Deadlines Singapore Families Should Know
There is no single Common App deadline. The markers below are for planning — always check each university's official page.
| Stage | Practical timing 2026-27 | What Singapore applicants should do |
|---|---|---|
| Common App opens | 1 August 2026 | Create an account, build a university list, record requirements |
| Early Decision / Early Action | Often November 2026 | Apply early only once policy, testing and financial implications are understood |
| Regular Decision | Often January 2027 | Use the time to strengthen essays, testing and documents |
| Financial-aid documents | University-specific | Check whether CSS Profile or another form is required |
| Decisions | Dec 2026 – spring 2027 | Check each university's timetable |
| Reply deadline | Often 1 May 2027 | Follow the date stated in the offer |

Concrete 2026-27 examples: the University of Pennsylvania lists 1 November 2026 (Early Decision) and 5 January 2027 (Regular Decision). Yale lists 1 November (Single-Choice Early Action) and 2 January (Regular Decision). Stanford lists 1 November (Restrictive Early Action) and 5 January (Regular Decision). Early Decision (e.g. Penn) is binding — admitted students must enrol; Yale's Single-Choice Early Action is non-binding but restricts other early applications.

Binding vs non-binding matters. Early Decision commits you to enrol if admitted. Early Action and Single-Choice Early Action do not — but Single-Choice Early Action still restricts applying early elsewhere. Check the exact policy before committing.
The 2026-27 Essay Prompts
Common App announced the 2026-27 prompts in February 2026 — the seven personal-essay options remain unchanged from the previous cycle, and the personal essay maximum is 650 words. Applicants choose one prompt. The prompts cover: a meaningful background/identity/interest/talent; a challenge, setback or failure and what was learnt; a time you questioned or challenged a belief; something someone did that made you thankful in a surprising way; an accomplishment or realisation that sparked growth; a topic so engaging you lose track of time; and an essay on any topic of your choice.
Singapore students should not treat the essay as a résumé in prose. A specific, genuine experience that shows how you think, respond and understand others beats an exaggerated story. Universities may also add supplemental essays, and some make the personal essay optional or required.

How to Enter Singapore Qualifications
JC / A-Levels
Enter your school, subjects, courses, grades and status accurately; the school then provides official forms/documents each university requires. Students applying before final A-Level results may need predicted results — Stanford, for example, asks British-system students for GCSE results and predicted A-Level marks via a school official, and says you need not convert marks to a US GPA.
IB Diploma
Report your programme and subjects accurately and follow each university's instructions on predicted results. Stanford requires a school official to send predicted IB marks (including TOK and extended-essay points) for IB students outside the US.
Polytechnic Diploma
Do not assume you are a first-year applicant. A university may classify you as a transfer applicant if you enrolled full-time in a degree-granting programme after secondary school and received credit. Disclose your full education history and ask the university if unsure — the wrong category changes forms, transcripts, recommendations, deadlines and financial-aid documents.

Transcripts and School Documents
Common App advises that international transcripts should not automatically be sent to its Transcript Processing Center — a university may require the school to send documents directly, or ask for a credential evaluation. Stanford requires official documents to be sent directly by the school, translated into English where necessary (applicants cannot translate their own).
Ask each university:
- Which documents are needed at application stage?
- Must the school send them directly?
- Are predicted results required?
- Is a credential evaluation needed?
- Are final results needed only after an offer?
- Are polytechnic transcripts required even for first-year applicants?

SAT, ACT and English Proficiency
There is no single testing rule. Common App lets you self-report scores, but each college sets its own policy — check the official admissions page for every university, not a third-party “test-optional” label. For 2026-27, be prepared that a target university may require the SAT or ACT: Stanford requires ACT or SAT for first-year applicants; Penn requires SAT or ACT (with a hardship waiver process). AP scores are not a substitute where SAT/ACT is required.

English-proficiency rules vary: Stanford does not require an English test (you may submit one); Yale requires non-native English speakers who have not had at least two years of English-medium secondary education to submit a test; Penn lists TOEFL, IELTS and the Duolingo English Test among accepted options. Do not assume that studying in Singapore automatically removes the requirement — verify the English-medium exemption.

Recommendations, Fees and Financial Aid
Invite recommenders early — a JC/IB/poly teacher may need time to understand the US format. Application fees are set by each university (some charge nothing, some offer waivers); international students may request a need-based Common App fee waiver, but check whether each university accepts it. Penn's application fee is USD 75 (≈ SGD 96 at an indicative USD1=SGD1.28 on 12 August 2026; the actual SGD amount varies with exchange and card rates).

Financial aid — plan before Early Decision
Investigate financial aid before an Early Decision (binding) application — Penn notes applicants wanting to compare aid packages may prefer Regular Decision. Many universities use the CSS Profile for international institutional aid: it costs USD 25 (≈ SGD 32) for the first institution and USD 16 (≈ SGD 20) each additional. The College Board lets families enter finances in their home currency.
Prepare income, assets and expense documents early; financial-aid forms may have earlier deadlines than the application.

The application is a project, not a single form. A Singapore student who verifies each university's policies early, gives the school and recommenders enough time, and keeps a realistic deadline tracker will have far fewer avoidable problems when November and January arrive.
Note on completeness: Common App does not publish one universal deadline, application fee, testing policy, transcript procedure or financial-aid requirement for all participating universities — university-specific details must be checked on each official admissions page. The specific total number of member colleges was not independently verified and is not stated here. USD→SGD figures are indicative.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Common App 2026-27 cycle open now?
Yes. Common App announced the 2026-27 season opened on 1 August 2026, for students applying to begin university in autumn 2027.
Are all US deadlines on 1 November or 1 January?
No. Those are common planning markers, but universities set their own dates. Penn lists 1 November 2026 (ED) and 5 January 2027 (RD); Yale lists 1 November (SCEA) and 2 January (RD).
Are the 2026-27 essay prompts unchanged?
Yes. The seven prompt choices carry over from the previous cycle, and the personal essay maximum stays 650 words. Universities may also require separate supplemental essays.
Should a polytechnic student apply as a first-year applicant?
Not automatically. It depends on the university's rules and your post-secondary study/credit history. Stanford says students who enrolled full-time in a degree-granting programme after secondary school and received credit must apply as transfer students.
Must every Singaporean student submit IELTS or TOEFL?
No. Policies differ — Stanford doesn't require an English test, while Yale and Penn describe circumstances where one is required. Check whether your English-medium schooling meets the exemption.
Must Singapore students submit the CSS Profile?
Only if a university uses it for institutional financial aid. Check each university's international financial-aid page and its (often earlier) deadline.
