Singapore's universities have just posted their strongest performance ever in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, released on 25 March 2026. The nation now has 42 subjects ranked in the global top 10 — placing it 3rd worldwide, behind only the United States and the United Kingdom.
About two-thirds of Singapore's subject entries — 76 out of 115 — climbed in the rankings, making Singapore the world's most improved higher education system this year. Here is the full breakdown with accurate data from official university sources.
Singapore Punches Above Its Weight
The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 evaluated more than 21,000 programmes across 1,912 institutions in 100 countries, spanning 55 academic disciplines and five broad faculty areas. Despite its small size, Singapore placed 3rd globally for top-10 subject entries — and more than triple its closest Asian competitor, China, which has 15.

“I think there is a sort of a causal loop between employability driving the rankings, and then the rankings making a destination more attractive from an employability perspective, and therefore employability further driving the rankings.”

NUS: Record 28 Subjects in the Global Top 10
The National University of Singapore (NUS) achieved its strongest performance since the QS subject rankings were introduced in 2011. A record 28 subjects were ranked in the global top 10, with seven ranked among the global top three — an all-time high and the most outside the US and UK.
The number of NUS top-10 placements has effectively doubled in just three years — from 14 in 2023 to 28 in 2026. Across all entries, 35 of 45 previously ranked subjects climbed the tables. NUS was the top-ranked Singapore university in 46 out of 53 subject and broad subject area entries from Singapore.

SMU: Among the World's Most Improved
Singapore Management University (SMU) was among the world's most improved institutions, with about 80% of its subjects rising in the rankings. Most notably, SMU's law programme jumped 45 places — one of the largest leaps of any subject across all universities globally.

“If a subject ranking is based entirely on research, then it tells us nothing about whether that translates into good programmes, which then translate into good employment. I don't knock rankings per se — it is useful for us to reflect, looking at how we perform, where we might be able to improve — but not blindly doing so.”

Students considering their options — whether after PSLE, O-Levels, or A-Levels — can be confident that NUS, NTU, and SMU offer globally recognised programmes that compete with (and often beat) the best in the US and UK.
Takeaways for Students
- Engineering & technology remain Singapore's strongest suit — NUS is 8th globally in this broad area
- AI and data science are rapidly rising — both NUS (#3) and NTU (#4) are global leaders
- Arts & humanities are surging — NUS Performing Arts jumped from 44th to 27th; Arts & Humanities now ranked 17th
- Employability matters — rankings increasingly measure real-world job outcomes, not just research output
- SMU's law programme (+45 places) shows smaller universities can make dramatic gains
