Paper 3 (听力) and Paper 4 (口试) together make up 41% of your total grade. Many students neglect oral and listening, but improving here is often the easiest way to boost your overall score since it mainly requires consistent practice.
🗣️ Paper 4: 口试 Oral Examination
📖 Part 1: 朗读 (Reading Aloud)
You read a short passage aloud. The examiners assess your pronunciation (发音), fluency (流利) and intonation (语调).
Pronunciation Tips
- Pay attention to the four tones — wrong tones change meaning
- Differentiate zh/ch/sh from z/c/s clearly
- Read at a natural speed — not too fast, not too slow
Fluency Tips
- Pause at commas (，) and full stops (。)
- Group words naturally — do not read character by character
- If you make a mistake, continue smoothly — do not stop
🖼️ Part 2: 看图说话 (Picture Discussion)
You describe a series of pictures and tell a story. Use the same structure as composition writing:
Describe the scene
Start with who, when, where. E.g., "图片中，一个小男孩和他的朋友在组屋楼下的游乐场玩。"
Tell what happened
Narrate the events shown in the pictures. Use connectors to link them.
Express feelings
Add emotional reactions: 高兴, 紧张, 难过, 感动.
Share a lesson
End with what you learned: "这个故事告诉我们..."
💬 Part 3: 会话 (Conversation)
The examiner asks you questions about daily life in Singapore. Common topics include school, family, hobbies, and current events. Speak naturally and give detailed answers.
Conversation Strategy
When the examiner asks a question, use this framework:
- Answer directly — Respond to the question clearly
- Give a reason — Explain why using 因为...
- Add an example — Share a personal experience (比如...)
- Conclude — Summarise your point (所以我觉得...)
🎧 Paper 3: 听力理解 Listening Comprehension
Paper 3 tests your ability to understand spoken Chinese. The recording is played twice. Use the first listen to understand the general idea, and the second listen to confirm your answers.
Before listening
Read all the questions first. Predict what the recording is about from the options.
First listen
Get the main idea. Mark answers you are confident about.
Second listen
Confirm your answers. Focus on questions you were unsure about.
After listening
Review all answers. Make sure you did not leave any blanks.
